Surfing at Carpinteria

The waves right in front of Carpinteria State Beach are usually gentle. The park's master plan says they are surfed mainly by locals and are considered routine, because an offshore reef and the Channel Islands take the energy out of the swell. Better surf is downcoast, and Rincon Point, a few miles east, is one of the most famous breaks in California.

The Waves at the State Beach

The same features that make Carpinteria a calm swimming beach keep its surf small: a natural reef just offshore and the Northern Channel Islands, which blunt the main northwesterly swells. The master plan describes the waves here as routine, ridden mostly by local surfers, and reports better surfing downcoast.

State Parks lists both surfing and windsurfing among the park's activities, and its park page links a live HD webcam and surf report.

Downcoast and Rincon

The master plan says good surfing is reported downcoast from the park, near the pier, and that Rincon Point, further south and east, is famous among surfers. State Parks calls Rincon an internationally renowned surf spot and runs a parking lot and access trail there. See Rincon Point.

Between the park and the downcoast breaks is the city's harbor seal rookery. Its beach and the water out to 1,000 feet are closed from December 1 to May 31, and approaching seals is illegal year-round. See harbor seals.
